Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying “I will try again tomorrow.” -Mary Anne Radmacher Just because you’re struggling, does not mean you’re failing. Are you a new or experienced mom who feels like something is just not quite right? Has starting a family been difficult and/or different than you imagined it would be? Has your new role left you feeling overwhelmed? Do you sometimes regret becoming a parent? Do you just need support while you figure it out? Trust your instincts! <image:title>PSYCHOTHERAPY - PSYCHOTHERAPY</image:title>
<image:caption>INDIVIDUAL PSYCHODYNAMIC PSYCHOTHERAPY “Dynamic psychotherapy, which facilitates a patient’s rewriting of his life narrative, his picture of himself, his past, present, and future, seems uniquely positioned to address the depth of an individual’s experience.” -Richard F. Summers Psychodynamic therapy is a form of therapy with a holistic focus on the perspective of the client. It doesn’t focus on outright changing behaviors but rather seeks to understand mental and emotional processes that influence behaviors. Psychodynamic therapist attempt to help clients find patterns in their emotions, thoughts and beliefs in order to gain insight into their current self. Additionally, special attention is payed to understanding a client’s childhood experiences, as these early life experiences are viewed as being extremely influential in our psychological development and functioning as adults. Psychodynamic therapy sessions are often intense and unscripted, as therapists arrive to sessions with no schedule or agenda but rather walk along side the client as they talk freely and follow their thoughts and feelings wherever they may go. In sessions, therapist will take a curious stance and follow a clients thoughts and feelings in an effort to discover a client’s recurring patterns and delve deeper into their unconscious mind. The goals of psychodynamic psychotherapy are to enhance a client’s self-awareness, to help a client better understand their thoughts, feelings and beliefs in relation to their past experiences and to allow the client to gain a sense of wholeness.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Couples therapy sessions are much like individual psychodynamic psychotherapy sessions, with therapist paying special attention to the clients family of origin, early childhood experiences, attachment styles and there influences on the development of communication styles, conflict resolution, relational dynamics and patterns. Additionally, the therapist helps couples to identify how all of these factors, as well as their thoughts, feelings, emotions and behaviors impact their relationship.</image:caption>

      <image:title>EMDR - EMDR</image:title>
<image:caption>Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a form of psychotherapy that was originally used to reduce the distressing symptoms associated with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic memories. However, EMDR is now used to alleviate distress (negative beliefs, physiological arousal, etc.) for a wide range of clinical disturbances. According to the Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Institute, Inc. “EMDR is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. Repeated studies show that by using EMDR therapy people can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference. It is widely assumed that severe emotional pain requires a long time to heal. EMDR therapy shows that the mind can in fact heal from psychological trauma much as the body recovers from physical trauma. When you cut your hand, your body works to close the wound. If a foreign object or repeated injury irritates the wound, it festers and causes pain. Once the block is removed, healing resumes. EMDR therapy demonstrates that a similar sequence of events occurs with mental processes. The brain’s information processing system naturally moves toward mental health. If the system is blocked or imbalanced by the impact of a disturbing event, the emotional wound festers and can cause intense suffering. Once the block is removed, healing resumes. Using the detailed protocols and procedures learned in EMDR therapy training sessions, clinicians help clients activate their natural healing processes.” You can find more information on the eight-phases of EMDR and the overall treatment process here: About EMDR Therapy Introduction to EMDR Therapy (Video) Experiencing EMDR Therapy If you have questions, would like to know more about EMDR or if you want to see if you would be a good candidate for EMDR treatment please don’t hesitate to schedule a consultation today. <image:title>GRIEF AND BEREAVEMENT COUNSELING - GRIEF AND BEREAVEMENT COUNSELING</image:title>
<image:caption>As a culture we tend to get it all wrong when it come to grief! In general we expect people to grieve in a very linear way, where a person moves from one stage to the next with ease and consistency. And this process should never take longer than a year. But apparently grief never read the rules and very rarely looks the way it’s “supposed to.” Grief is messy, complicated and unpredictable…just like the love it is born out of! When in grief we are often meet by people who mean well but are uncomfortable with the heaviness and emotions that accompany the grieving process and they say and/or do all the wrong things. Causing the grieving individual to feel lonely and isolating. The good news is therapy can help. By not trying to change or take away a clients sadness but rather by sitting alongside them and allow the feelings to just be, we pay honor to the life, love and relationship lost. Our philosophy on grief is simple, it is not a final destination that you reach where you finally accept and move on but rather grieving is a journey of healing, and a process that cannot be rushed. Our experiences are carried with us for a lifetime and therefore we never “get over it” when we lose something or someone close to us. Rather we carry them and our experience of them in our hearts. Even though the wound caused by loss eventually heals, and the excruciation pain lessens, we will always wear the scar and feel a slight ache from that love that we lost. Our grief never goes away but rather our experience of and relationship to it changes. So whether you are grieving a loss or trying to support someone who is, we would love to support you through the process.</image:caption>

      <image:title>ADHD - ADHD</image:title>
<image:caption>ADHD Treatment for Adults According to the National Institute for Mental Health: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is marked by an ongoing pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development. People with ADHD experience an ongoing pattern of the following types of symptoms: Inattention means a person may have difficulty staying on task, sustaining focus, and staying organized, and these problems are not due to defiance or lack of comprehension. Hyperactivity means a person may seem to move about constantly, including in situations when it is not appropriate, or excessively fidgets, taps, or talks. In adults, hyperactivity may mean extreme restlessness or talking too much. Impulsivity means a person may act without thinking or have difficulty with self-control. Impulsivity could also include a desire for immediate rewards or the inability to delay gratification. An impulsive person may interrupt others or make important decisions without considering long-term consequences. Contrary to previously held beliefs about the diagnosis, people simply don’t “grow out of it” and it does not necessarily “get better with time.” In fact many symptoms might get significantly worse, and many people develop maladaptive and/or detrimental coping mechanisms as a way to function, especially for those who have gone undiagnosed until adulthood. While therapy itself cannot change the underlying cause of ADHD, psychological interventions, especially when coupled with medication, have been shown to help individuals with ADHD and their family manage symptoms and improve everyday functioning. Additionally, psychotherapy can be effective for treating symptoms of anxiety, depression, and/or trauma that may occur along with ADHD. Our approach to working with ADHD includes identifying your uniques needs, with specific focus on which areas of executive functioning that you struggle with, and tailoring behavioral interventions to assist your with daily functioning. Additionally, we can help to improve self-esteem and self-confidence, and help you explore if medication might be the right decision for you, providing referrals to well trusted prescribing psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners if needed.</image:caption>
